How does it feel to cross the line between imagination and insanity?
Wolfgang Rihm’s powerfully evocative chamber opera tells the story of the psychiatric downfall of real-life German poet Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz - at first hailed as a genius, and later reviled as a madman. Recounting the nineteen days Lenz spent with pastor Johann Oberlin, Rihm’s astonishing score depicts the poet’s turmoil as he battles to overcome his deteriorating mental condition.
A rare opportunity to experience this extraordinary work up close, this first-ever English language production of Jakob Lenz is directed by the award-winning Sam Brown and stars the exceptional actor-singer Andrew Shore in the title role.
